Blue Dolphin Cichlid (Cyrtocara Moorii)
The Blue Dolphin Cichlid, also known as the Blue Moorii or Humphead Cichlid, is a striking and popular African cichlid species. This fish gets its common name from its distinctive shape, with a protruding forehead resembling a dolphin's head. Native to Lake Malawi in East Africa, the Blue Dolphin Cichlid is known for its vibrant blue coloration and unique appearance.
In terms of appearance, the Blue Dolphin Cichlid showcases a beautiful blue body with iridescent scales that shimmer in different lighting conditions. Males often exhibit more intense coloration and larger humps on their foreheads compared to females. They have elongated bodies and can reach an adult size of around 7 to 8 inches. Their unique shape and coloration make them an attractive centerpiece fish for larger aquariums.
The Blue Dolphin Cichlid personality is generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding periods. They are active swimmers and prefer the middle to upper levels of the aquarium. This cichlid is a shoaling species and thrives when kept in a group with 2 or 3 females per male to balance the dynamics.
When it comes to tank mates, the Blue Dolphin Cichlid is known for its peaceful nature, making it unsuitable for keeping with lively species like Mbuna. Ideal tankmates for the Blue Dolphin Cichlid include Frontosa, large peaceful Haps like Fossorochromis Rostratus, and Rift Lake Synodontis species. However, due to its size, it may intimidate smaller fish.
In terms of diet, Blue Dolphin Cichlids are omnivorous. Due to its natural inclination as a micro-predator, the majority of the Blue Dolphin Cichlid's diet should consist of live and frozen foods. It particularly enjoys consuming bloodworms, brine shrimp, krill, chopped earthworms, prawns, and similar offerings. While dried foods can be included, it is important not to rely solely on them as the sole food source.
In creating an ideal tank habitat for Blue Dolphin Cichlids, it is recommended to use a sand substrate and ensure there is ample open swimming space for the Blue Dolphin Cichlid. Limit the use of rocks and caves to the edges of the aquarium if the tank is not exceptionally large. This is because the species can be skittish and may potentially harm itself in a setup with excessive rocks. Suitable plants for the aquarium include hardy species like Java Fern, Anubias, and Vallisneria. Lighting should be moderate, providing both shaded areas and areas with gentle illumination.
In terms of water parameters and tank size, Blue Dolphin Cichlids thrive in freshwater conditions. The minimum recommended aquarium size for a single Blue Dolphin Cichlid is around 75 gallons, but larger tanks are preferred, especially when housing multiple individuals. The water should have a pH range of 7.5-8.5, hardness between 5-15 dGH, and a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C).
