Description

Kenyi Cichlid (Metriaclima Lombardoi)

The Kenyi Cichlid, also known as Lombardoi Cichlid or Zebra Mbuna, is a striking fish that captivates with its vibrant colors and unique patterns. With its elongated body and pointed head, the Kenyi Cichlid displays a beautiful combination of blue and yellow stripes. Males exhibit more intense coloration, while females often have a duller appearance. As they mature, both sexes can reach an adult size of around 4 to 5 inches.

In terms of temperament, the Kenyi Cichlid is known for its aggressive nature, especially males. They establish territories and can become territorial and dominant within the aquarium. They prefer to inhabit the middle and bottom levels of the tank, constantly exploring their environment and defending their territory.

When it comes to tank mates, it is essential to choose carefully to ensure compatibility. Ideally, select other Malawi Mbuna cichlids with similar aggression levels and sizes, such as Pseudotropheus species or other Metriaclima species. Avoid keeping them with peaceful or slow-moving fish, as the Kenyi Cichlid may intimidate or harass them. Also, keeping multiple males in the same tank is not recommended, as they are likely to engage in aggressive confrontations. A group of 1 male with multiple females is a common arrangement to minimize aggression.

As herbivores, the Kenyi Cichlid relies on a diet primarily composed of vegetable and plant matter. It is essential to offer them a high-quality vegetable-based flake or pellet food as the main component of their diet. This ensures they receive the necessary nutrients to support a strong immune system. Additionally, their diet can be supplemented with occasional consumption of meaty or combination flake or pellet foods designed for omnivorous African Cichlid species. However, the majority of their nutritional intake should come from vegetable-based foods to promote their overall well-being.

Creating an ideal tank habitat for Kenyi Cichlids involves replicating their natural rocky environment. Provide a sandy substrate that allows for digging and burrowing. Decorate the aquarium with piles of rocks or rock formations to form caves, providing hiding places and territorial boundaries. Adding hardy plants like Anubias, Java Fern, or Vallisneria can offer additional cover and contribute to the natural aesthetic. Lighting should be moderate, providing both shaded areas and well-lit spaces.

As for water parameters and tank size, the Kenyi Cichlid thrives in freshwater conditions. Maintaining a minimum aquarium size of 50 gallons is recommended to provide ample swimming space and territory for multiple individuals. A larger tank of 75 gallons or more is preferable for an ideal community aquarium. The water parameters should be maintained within the range of pH 7.5-8.5, hardness (dGH) 10-20, and temperature around 75-82°F (24-28°C).
