Ropefish (Erpetoichthys Calabaricus)
Characterized by its fascinating long, snake-like body, the Ropefish or Reedfish, brings an engaging, playful dynamic to the aquarium. Its compelling physical characteristics, coupled with its active behavior, make it a fascinating addition to a compatible aquatic community.
Typically growing to around 15 inches, the Ropefish requires a generous aquarium size to accommodate its unique shape and active swimming habits. These creatures exhibit a relatively peaceful demeanor, and cohabit comfortably with other large, semi-aggressive species, given enough space and suitable hiding spots. Smaller fish may be perceived as prey, while overly aggressive species can stress the Ropefish, so choose tank mates wisely.
Ropefish are carnivorous and nocturnal, preferring to feed in low light conditions. Their diet should comprise a mix of meaty foods like bloodworms, shrimp, and small fish. They may also consume commercial meaty pellets and wafers, but live or frozen foods often prove more beneficial. Daily feeding, calibrated to what they can consume in 5 minutes, is recommended.
Ropefish thrive in aquarium setups that mimic their natural habitats. Dim lighting or shaded areas created by vegetation or driftwood, combined with numerous hiding places and a soft substrate to mimic riverbed conditions, are ideal. Given the Ropefish's unique shape and active behavior, an aquarium with depth and length is essential, with a minimum footprint of 6 x 2 feet.
As Ropefish can breathe atmospheric air via their lung-like swim bladder, a minimum 90-gallon aquarium with access to the water's surface is necessary. They prefer water conditions with a pH of 6.2 to 7.8, hardness of 5-20 dGH, and temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C).
Finally, as Ropefish are notorious for their escaping abilities, a tightly fitted aquarium cover is a must.
