Clown Rasbora (Rasbora Kalochroma)
The Clown Rasbora is a striking and colorful freshwater fish that originates from the slow-moving streams and rivers of Sumatra and Borneo in Indonesia. Sporting an attractive combination of silvery-gray, black, and red, these fish have a distinctive appearance, making them a popular choice for aquarists.
They grow up to 4 inches in size and exhibit a peaceful, schooling behavior, making them compatible with other similarly sized, non-aggressive fish. Clown Rasboras are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six to encourage their natural behavior and minimize stress.
They have an omnivorous diet, and in an aquarium setting, they will appreciate high-quality flake food, pellets, and a variety of live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms.
When setting up a tank for Clown Rasboras, aim to replicate their natural habitat by incorporating a sandy substrate, driftwood, and plenty of plants, such as Java fern, Cryptocoryne, and Anubias. Add some leaf litter and floating plants to create a dimly lit environment and provide additional cover. Ensure that the water is soft, slightly acidic to neutral, and maintains a stable temperature to keep these fish in optimal health.
A minimum tank size of 30 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks being more suitable for larger schools. The ideal water parameters are a pH of 6.0-7.0, hardness of 1-10 dGH, and a temperature of 73-82°F (23-28°C).
Additionally, a securely fitted lid is essential to prevent escape, as the Clown Rasbora, like most rasboras, is an adept jumper.
