Emerald Eye Rasbora (Brevibora Dorsiocellata)
The Emerald Eye Rasbora is a small, peaceful freshwater fish native to the blackwater rivers and forest streams of Southeast Asia. These captivating fish are characterized by their slender, silver body adorned with a black lateral stripe and distinctive emerald-green eyes, which shimmer under aquarium lighting.
They grow up to 1.5 inches and are best kept in schools of 6 or more to allow them to exhibit their natural behavior and feel secure. These peaceful fish are well-suited for community tanks with similarly sized, non-aggressive tank mates. Tank companions could include other rasboras, tetras, and small peaceful catfish. The Emerald Eye Rasbora's temperament makes it an excellent addition to most peaceful aquarium setups.
Emerald Eye Rasboras are omnivorous, and their diet should include a mix of high-quality flake food or micro-pellets, along with occasional live and frozen foods such as brine shrimp, daphnia, and bloodworms. Due to their small size, they are an excellent choice for community tanks with other peaceful, similarly sized species.
To create a suitable habitat for Emerald Eye Rasboras, use either a dark or soft substrate and provide ample hiding spots with driftwood, rocks, and plants such as Java fern, Anubias, and Cryptocoryne. Floating plants can also be added to mimic their natural dimly-lit environment. Ensure the water is soft and slightly acidic, and maintain stable water conditions. It is important to avoid introducing this fish to a biologically unstable aquarium, as it is sensitive to fluctuations in water chemistry. Filtration should be good but water movement should be gentle.
A minimum tank size of 10 gallons is recommended, with larger tanks being more suitable for larger schools. The ideal water parameters are a pH of 5.5-7.0, hardness of 1-10 dGH, and a temperature of 74-82°F (23-28°C).
Additionally, a securely fitted lid is essential to prevent escape, as the Emerald Eye Rasbora, like most rasboras, is an adept jumper.
