Description

Kribensis (Pelvicachromis Pulcher)

The Kribensis, also known as the Purple Cichlid, is a vibrant and dynamic species that adds a splash of color to any aquarium. With their unique color pattern and high activity level, Kribensis are one of the most spectator-friendly species out there. Originating from West Africa, these fish are scientifically known as Pelvicachromis Pulcher.

Kribensis are characterized by their stunning coloration, with males displaying a mix of yellow, red, and blue hues, while females are primarily red with a purple sheen. They have an elongated body shape with a pointed dorsal fin and a rounded anal fin. Adult Kribensis typically reach a size of about 4 inches.

Kribensis are easy to care for and are a popular choice among hobbyists. They prefer dense undergrowth and plenty of caves to retreat into and call their home, especially if you have spawning pairs in your tank.

In terms of personality, Kribensis are peaceful and sociable. They are active swimmers and enjoy exploring their surroundings. They are not schooling fish, but they enjoy their own kind's company. A pair or small group can coexist peacefully in a community tank.

The Kribensis is a great choice for a community tank, but it's important to note that they can become territorial during breeding periods. Despite this, they are generally shy and reserved, so it's best to avoid housing them with particularly active or large species. Suitable tank mates include small characins, barbs, danios, rasboras, Corydoras, gouramis, and Loricariids. While they can coexist with other cichlids, especially West African Dwarves, sufficient space is necessary for each pair to establish their own territory. If you plan to keep more than one pair of Kribensis, a larger tank will be required to accommodate their territorial needs.

Kribensis are omnivorous and enjoy a varied diet. They can be fed high-quality flakes, cichlid pellets, and a variety of live or frozen foods like brine shrimp, daphnia, or bloodworms. Vegetable matter, such as spirulina or blanched spinach, can also be included in their diet.

Creating an ideal habitat for Kribensis involves mimicking their natural environment. For the substrate, use fine sand or small, smooth gravel. They prefer spacious aquariums with plenty of hiding spots. These can be created using clay flowerpots, rockwork arranged to form caves, and pieces of driftwood. Flat rocks, such as slates, can be used to encourage breeding. Dense live plants, such as Java Fern, Anacharis, or Anubias, can provide cover and contribute to the tank's overall health. Lighting should be moderate to highlight their vibrant colors. Floating plants can be added to help subdue lighting.

As for water parameters, Kribensis require a minimum aquarium size of 20 gallons. For a community setup, a 30-gallon tank or larger is recommended. They thrive in water with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5 and a hardness of 5-20 dGH. The ideal water temperature for Kribensis is between 75-80°F (24-27°C).
