L134 Leopard Frog Pleco (Peckoltia Compta)
The L134 Leopard Frog Pleco is adorned with a striking pattern of black and yellow stripes. The fish's coloration ranges from a creamy yellow to a rich gold, with the stripes varying from deep brown to black. As adults, they grow to a moderate size of about 3.5 to 4.5 inches, making them suitable for a variety of tank sizes.
In terms of personality, the Leopard Frog Pleco is generally peaceful and somewhat shy. They are nocturnal creatures, preferring to hide during the day and becoming more active at night. Their level of aggression is low, and they are not known to be territorial. They are bottom dwellers and prefer to swim near the substrate. It’s best to keep only one in a tank unless it is large enough to provide multiple territories. Each Leopard Frog Pleco will claim a territory of approximately 12 inches by 12 inches with broken-up sight lines.
When it comes to compatibility, the Leopard Frog Pleco gets along well with most peaceful community fish. Ideal tank mates include small tetras, barbs, angelfish, gouramis, and rasboras, as well as other non-aggressive bottom dwellers like Corydoras catfish. However, they should not be kept with aggressive or territorial species like cichlids or large predatory fish, as these can stress or harm the pleco.
The diet of the Leopard Frog Pleco is omnivorous. They enjoy a variety of foods, including algae wafers, sinking pellets, and fresh vegetables like zucchini and cucumber. They also appreciate occasional meaty treats like bloodworms or brine shrimp.
Creating a comfortable habitat for the Leopard Frog Pleco involves incorporating elements that mimic their natural environment. This includes fine sand or smooth gravel substrate, allowing them to forage without damaging their delicate barbels. Plants such as Java fern, with its large leaves, can provide a sense of safety and cover as the Leopard Frog Pleco is a plant-friendly species. Floating plants can help reduce light intensity, catering to the Pleco's preference for low-light environments. It's also important to include structures like caves made from smooth rocks, slate, or terracotta pipes, to provide the Pleco with a sense of security.
In terms of water parameters, the Leopard Frog Pleco is quite adaptable. The minimum aquarium size for a single individual is 30 gallons, while a community aquarium should be at least 50 gallons to provide ample space. The ideal pH range is between 6.5 and 7.5, and the hardness should be within 5-15 dGH. The temperature should be maintained between 74-82°F (23-28°C). Despite their adaptability to various water conditions, Leopard Frog Plecos thrive best in well-oxygenated water with consistent water parameters.
