Marbled Hatchetfish (Carnegiella strigata)
The Marbled Hatchetfish, also known as Marbled Flying Characin, is a small, fascinating freshwater fish known for its unique shape, behavior, and attractive marbled pattern. Their bodies have a triangular shape with a distinct arch, resembling a hatchet. The Marbled Hatchetfish displays a mix of brown, black, and silver colors, adding interest to any aquarium.
They have a peaceful and timid personality, reaching a size of about 1.5 inches. A school of at least 8-10 individuals is recommended for their well-being. Several slower swimming, middle-dwelling community fish can be paired with the timid nature of Marbled Hatchetfish. Suitable tank mates include Dwarf Gouramis, Neon Tetras, Rummy Nose Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras, Pencilfish, and Corydoras catfish. It is important to avoid faster swimming fish like Danios or Barbs, as they may outcompete the Marbled Hatchetfish for food and cause unnecessary stress.
These omnivorous fish enjoy a varied diet that includes high-quality flake food, small insects, and live or frozen foods like daphnia and brine shrimp. Supplementing their diet with vegetable matter or algae wafers can also be beneficial.
The Marbled Hatchetfish prefers a densely planted tank with plenty of hiding places and subdued lighting. Floating plants will help create a natural environment and provide them with a sense of security.
They thrive in tanks with slow to moderate water flow and a minimum size of 20 gallons. Maintain a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH of 6.0 to 7.5, and a hardness of 2-12 dGH. Monitor the water quality since Marbled Hatchetfish can be sensitive to elevated nitrates and swings in water chemistry.
A tight-fitting lid is essential, as these fish are excellent jumpers.
