Platinum Gourami (Trichopodus Trichopterus .Sp)
The Platinum Gourami is a captivating color morph of the Three Spot Gourami, displaying a bright, silver-white sheen on its body. This metallic appearance adds a touch of elegance to any aquarium, making them a popular choice among aquarists. Like other Gouramis, they possess a labyrinth organ, which allows them to breathe air from the surface of the water, making them well-adapted to environments with low oxygen levels.
These peaceful fish grow up to 6 inches in length, making them suitable for larger community aquariums. Platinum Gouramis are not schooling fish, but they can be kept in pairs or small groups.
Platinum Gouramis are moderately active swimmers, and their curious and peaceful nature makes them a great addition to community aquariums with other non-aggressive tank mates. However, during the breeding season, males may become territorial and aggressive, so it's essential to provide plenty of hiding spots and space for them to establish their territory.
These fish are intelligent and may recognize their owners or display signs of excitement when it's feeding time. They will also communicate with each other through body movements and postures, making them fascinating to observe.
Regarding tank setup, Platinum Gouramis appreciate a well-decorated environment that replicates their natural habitat, typically including dense vegetation and slow-moving water. Floating plants can provide additional cover and help to diffuse bright lighting.
Their diet consists of a mix of plant-based and protein-rich foods, including flake or pellet foods, frozen or live foods like bloodworms and brine shrimp, and vegetables like spinach and lettuce.
To create a comfortable environment for the Platinum Gourami, provide a well-planted tank with hiding spots using plants, rocks, and driftwood. A slow water flow and dim lighting will also make them feel more secure.
The ideal tank size for these fish is at least 30 gallons, with a larger community aquarium size of around 50 gallons or more. Maintain water temperatures between 75-82°F (24-28°C), a pH range of 6.0-8.0, and a hardness between 5-20 dGH.
Although Platinum Gouramis are relatively hardy and can adapt to various water parameters, maintaining consistent water conditions is crucial for their overall health. Regular water changes and proper filtration will help ensure a clean and healthy environment for these captivating fish.
