Lapradei Bichir (Polypterus Lapradei)
The Lapradei Bichir, with its robust body and earthy tones, presents a captivating view to any aquatic enthusiast. Its elongated form and bold markings create a sense of rugged natural beauty.
Growing up to a substantial 16-20 inches in length, Lapradei Bichirs require a spacious environment. They are generally passive, cohabiting well with other large, peaceful fish when provided with ample swimming areas, rocks, and crevices for exploration. Avoid pairing them with smaller fishes that may be viewed as prey or aggressive species that could harass the Bichir.
This Bichir species thrives with semi-aggressive tank mates, including larger South American and African Cichlids, but aggressive Cichlids should be avoided.
Lapradei Bichirs are nocturnal carnivores that benefit from feeding in dimly lit or unlit settings, leveraging their sharp sense of smell to locate food. A diet consisting of various meaty foods, such as bloodworms, shrimp, and small fish, is optimal. While they may accept commercial meaty pellets and wafers, live or frozen foods are preferred. Feeding should occur once or twice daily, with food quantities adjusted to ensure consumption within 5 minutes.
These creatures prefer aquariums that replicate their natural habitat, with dim lighting or shaded areas, plenty of hiding spots, and a soft substrate to mimic riverbed conditions. A minimum aquarium footprint of 6 x 2 feet is advisable, with particular attention given to ample depth and length.
A minimum 90-gallon aquarium with access to the water's surface is necessary for adult Lapradei Bichirs as they can breathe atmospheric air using their swim bladder. Ideal water conditions include a pH of 6.2 to 7.8, hardness of 5-20 dGH, and temperature range of 72-82°F (22-28°C).
A tight-fitting aquarium cover is recommended due to their propensity for escaping.
