Pearl Gourami (Trichopodus leerii)
The Pearl Gourami also known as Mosaic Gourami, Lace Gourami, Diamond Gourami, and Leeri Gourami.
Pearl Gourami is a beautifully patterned fish with a unique combination of colors and patterns, making it a popular choice for aquarium enthusiasts. This striking fish is adorned with a myriad of tiny white spots on its body, resembling pearls, hence its name. Males have a more vibrant orange hue on their throat and belly, which intensifies during breeding.
The Pearl Gourami typically grows up to 5 inches in length and has a peaceful temperament, making it suitable for community tanks. They are best kept in groups of at least 5 individuals, with more females than males, to reduce aggression during breeding.
They are peaceful fish and can coexist with other non-aggressive fish. Generally, it’s best to keep Pearl Gouramis with other fish of the same size and temperament. They can also live happily with other small schooling fish, such as Tetras, Rasboras, and Corydoras, provided the aquarium is large enough. Additionally, avoid fin-nipping species, as this may stress the Pearl Gouramis.
In the wild, these fish have a varied diet that consists of small insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. In captivity, they are omnivorous and will accept a wide range of foods, including flakes, pellets, frozen, and live foods.
When setting up a tank for Pearl Gouramis, it's essential to provide a spacious environment with plenty of hiding spots in the form of plants, driftwood, and rocks. Ideal conditions include floating plants, dim lighting, and a dark substrate.
A 30-gallon tank is the minimum size recommended for these fish, although 55 gallon tanks are preferred for communities. They thrive in slightly acidic to neutral water with a pH of 6.0-7.5, a hardness of 5-19 dGH, and a temperature of 77-82°F (25-28°C). Though they have a preference for soft, acidic water, they can adapt to various water conditions. Their adaptability and gentle temperament make them a perfect fit for community tanks.
