Senegal Bichir Longfin (Polypterus Senegalus. Sp Longfin)
The Senegal Bichir Longfin, notable for its elongated body and magnificent flowing fins, is a remarkable addition to any large freshwater aquarium. Its captivating appearance and dynamic swimming style make it a focal point in the aquatic community.
Reaching an average length of 14 inches, this Bichir requires a generously-sized aquarium, offering ample swimming areas and hiding spots, such as crevices and rock formations. The Senegal Bichir Longfin is generally peaceful with other large, semi-aggressive fish, but smaller species may be viewed as potential prey, and overly aggressive tank mates could cause stress.
Like other Bichirs, the Senegal Longfin is a nocturnal carnivore, preferring to feed under dim lighting. A diet rich in meaty foods, including live or frozen bloodworms, shrimp, and small fish, is optimal. Although some may accept commercial meaty pellets and wafers, they thrive on live or frozen foods. They should be fed once or twice daily, with the food amount adjusted to what they can consume within 5 minutes.
The ideal habitat for Senegal Bichir Longfin includes dim lighting, a soft substrate, plenty of vegetation or driftwood for shade, and numerous hiding places. With its unique shape and behavior, an aquarium that emphasizes depth and length is ideal, with a minimum footprint of 6 x 2 feet.
This species is capable of breathing atmospheric air via their lung-like swim bladder, necessitating an aquarium of at least 75 gallons with access to the water's surface. They prefer water conditions of a pH 6.2 to 7.8, hardness 5-20 dGH, and temperatures between 72-82°F (22-28°C).
Lastly, a secure cover for the aquarium is a must, given the Bichir's proclivity for escape attempts.
