Silver Arowana (Osteoglossum Bicirrhosum)
The Silver Arowana, known as the "Water Monkey" for its ability to leap out of the water to catch prey, is an impressive sight with its sleek, elongated body and striking silver scales. Its mouth is uniquely turned upward, giving it a distinct look.
Growing up to 36 inches, the Silver Arowana requires a large tank with plenty of open swimming space. This fish is semi-aggressive, so tank mates should be chosen carefully. Larger, similarly semi-aggressive species are ideal companions. Smaller fish are likely to be seen as food due to the Arowana's carnivorous nature.
Feeding the Silver Arowana involves a diet rich in meaty foods. It readily accepts live or frozen fish, shrimp, and occasionally insects. Some individuals may also take pellet foods. Feed it once or twice daily, with a portion size it can consume within a few minutes.
The Silver Arowana prefers a spacious, minimally decorated aquarium to allow room for swimming. Overhanging decorations are not recommended due to their jumping habits. A secure, tight-fitting lid is essential to prevent escapes.
The Silver Arowana is a surface dweller, predominantly swimming near the water's surface in the wild. A minimum aquarium size of 200 gallons is suggested for a single adult fish, with an emphasis on tank length and width over height. They prefer water with a pH of 6.0-7.0, hardness of 5-15 dGH, and temperatures between 75-85°F (24-29°C).
